If you are walking through leaves and underbrush in a park or in the woods, you might hear some scritch-scratching in the leaves that sounds like a squirrel moving around. Often it’s the Spotted Towhee, looking for bugs and seeds to eat. It makes a lot of noise for such a small bird. The Towhee uses a jump-and-kick method for locating food. It jumps up, and at the same time kicks both feet backward. That kick pushes leaves out of the way and uncovers the bugs and seeds. |
