Red-necked Phalarope

The name of this bird comes from the red patch on the neck of the female during breeding season. Large flocks of Phalaropes migrate through California in the spring and fall. They wade and swim in ponds and lakes.

The Phalarope is a nervous, constant eater who pecks insects off the surface of the water. To stir up more insects from deeper water, it spins around like a top in tight circles.
