Coast Live Oak

Quercus agrifolia

This huge shade tree is home to several kinds of birds, insects and reptiles. Insects live in its bark and eat its leaves. Birds nest in its branches. Reptiles and salamanders live in the dead leaves below the tree.
The seeds of the oak are called acorns. Animals like Scrub Jays, Acorn Woodpeckers and squirrels store the acorns for winter food. Native Americans depended on acorns as the main source of food. They harvested acorns for mush, breads and soups.
