California Mussel Mytilus californianus |

When the tide is high, mussels are underwater. With their shell slightly open, they stick out a “beard” of tiny hairs called cilia which wave in the current. This is how they collect oxygen and tiny plankton for food. When the tide recedes, mussels are exposed on the rocks, where people like to collect them. Sometimes they are dangerous to eat. On the Pacific Coast from May to November they may be poisonous to humans. Be careful! |
