Mule Deer

Odocoileus hemionus

This kind of deer is named after a mule, because they both have big ears.

Deer have an interesting jaw that is just right for chomping on tough grass. The top is just bone, with no teeth. The bottom teeth strike the top bone like a knife chopping vegetables on a chopping block.

The male Mule Deer has antlers. Antlers are different from horns. Both are made of bone, but antlers are only temporary. Each year the antlers fall off and the deer gets a new set.
