American Kestrel Falco sparverius |
The Kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America. The male’s back is blue, and the female’s back is reddish brown. You might see it hovering over an open field, then swooping down like a fighter jet to catch an insect or rodent. Kestrels do not build nests of sticks and plant stems like other birds of prey. They are “cavity nesters.” That means they like to nest in hollow trees or inside the eaves of buildings, or in nest boxes designed especially for them. |
