Photo ©Patricia McQuade	Grebes swim a little, then dive suddenly, and stay under water a long time. They don’t fly much. They eat small fish and aquatic insects. They dig crayfish out of the mud at the bottom of ponds and lakes, and easily crush them with their very strong bill. A mother Grebe hides her chicks in their nest of floating vegetation at the edge of the water. Then she swims and dives all day, bringing up crayfish to feed to them. The chicks call a very loud, constant cheep, cheep to tell the mother they are still hungry.
