California Dodder

Cuscuta salina

Dodder is a parasite. That means it grows with its roots attached to another plant and feeds from that plant. Some parasites kill the plant they feed on, but Dodder does not. Here you see it growing on Pickleweed.

A common name for Dodder is Witch’s hair. Its wiry stems look like coarse hair that turns bright orange in the summer. Look closely at this plant and you will see a tiny, delicate white flower that blooms in the summer and fall.
