Hummingbirds can hover in place like a helicopter while
they drink nectar from flowers. They can fly backwards, and even upside
down. In the winter, when all the other hummingbirds fly south to stay warm, Anna’s Hummingbird stays here. The female builds a tiny nest. She makes it out of plant down, and gathers spider webs to glue it together. Then she lays 2 eggs in it, the size of jelly-beans. When her babies hatch, she feeds them insects that she catches in mid-air. |
